Most US founders believe a successful Series B round or a feature in TechCrunch guarantees a Wikipedia entry. In reality, the platform’s barrier to entry is higher than it has ever been. For an individual in the United States, Wikipedia is not a directory for successful entrepreneurs; it is an encyclopedia designed to document subjects that have already achieved significant historical or social impact. 

Before you begin writing, you must understand the concept of Notability. Wikipedia editors rely primarily on the General Notability Guideline (GNG). This requires significant coverage in reliable, independent, secondary sources. If the only places your name appears are your own company website, social media profiles, or 'pay-to-play' lists, an article will be deleted within minutes of publication.

## The necessity of secondary sources

To pass a community review, you need at least three to five high-quality sources that are deep dives into your biography or specific achievements. Mentions in a '30 Under 40' list or a brief quote in a Wall Street Journal article about an industry trend do not count as significant coverage.

## Navigating the Articles for Creation (AfC) process

For new accounts or those with a conflict of interest, the safest route is a submission through the Articles for Creation (AfC) workflow. This places your draft in a queue where experienced volunteers review it against the site's standards. 

Currently, the backlog for AfC can range from three to six months. It is common for a first submission to be declined. The feedback provided is often terse, citing 'lack of depth in coverage' or 'promotional tone.' Success in this phase requires an clinical, detached writing style. You must avoid adjectives like ‘innovative,’ ‘visionary,’ or ‘market-leading.’ If a fact cannot be cited to a third-party source, it must be removed.

## The reality of conflict of interest (COI)

Under the WP:PAID policy, any professional service or employee editing on behalf of a founder must disclose their relationship. Transparency is not optional. Wikipedia’s community is highly adept at identifying undisclosed paid editing (UPE). If a page is flagged for UPE, the account is often banned, and the article is tagged with a permanent warning banner that damages the founder’s reputation more than having no page at all.

Working within the rules means acknowledging that you do not own the page. Once a biography is live, other editors can and will add information you may dislike, such as details regarding lawsuits, failed ventures, or public controversies, provided those details are sourced in the media.

This is exactly when editors are most suspicious of promotional intent. The best time to pursue a page is when you have a steady, multi-year history of press coverage that has nothing to do with a current marketing push.
