Every integrated agency has the same gap. Wikipedia comes up in pitches, in annual planning, and in crises. Almost none has someone on payroll who has ever successfully navigated an article review, and the work is too intermittent to justify hiring for.

## Why the obvious workarounds fail

Handing it to a junior with a Wikipedia account creates undisclosed paid editing exposure in the agency's name. Handing it to the cheapest freelancer on a marketplace creates the same exposure with less oversight. Both put the agency's name on a conduct problem that surfaces publicly months later.

## What a workable partner arrangement looks like

*Disclosure names the right entity.* Wikipedia's rules require disclosure of the editor's employer, client, and affiliation. In an agency arrangement that chain includes the end client. Confirm your partner discloses the full relationship rather than naming only your agency.

*The assessment is a separate, saleable deliverable.* The most valuable thing a Wikipedia partner produces is often the finding that an article isn't viable yet, plus a sourcing gap analysis. Sell that as a standalone product. It protects the client, generates revenue on projects that don't proceed, and gives your earned media team a concrete brief.

*Clear escalation for live issues.* Wikipedia problems tend to arrive with a crisis attached. Know who you call at 9pm and what their realistic response is — which, honestly, is usually "we file a properly sourced talk page request tomorrow," not "we fix it tonight."

*Documented client education.* Half the value is managing expectations. A one-page explainer on what Wikipedia will and will not do, given to the client at kickoff, prevents most of the friction later.

## What to write into the contract

Compliance with the Wikimedia Terms of Use as an explicit obligation. A prohibition on undisclosed accounts. Ownership and disclosure of the account making the edits. Reporting that shows you the actual edits, not a summary.

## The positioning opportunity

Most agencies handle Wikipedia by quietly hoping the question doesn't come up. Being the agency that can answer it accurately — including the parts clients don't want to hear — is a credible differentiator in a pitch, and it costs you a partner relationship rather than a headcount.
