Here's what disclosure actually requires and what gets accounts banned. Short answer: yes, with disclosure. The version most agencies operate on — that Wikipedia editing is a grey market — is wrong in both directions. It's neither prohibited nor unregulated. ## The baseline rule The Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use require that anyone receiving compensation for edits disclose their employer, their client, and their affiliation. This has been in force since 2014 and applies across Wikimedia projects. It isn't optional, and it isn't satisfied by a vague note. ## Where disclosure goes On English Wikipedia, the accepted routes are a statement on the editor's user page, a note in the edit summary, or a declaration on the talk page of the article concerned. Best practice is the user page, because it's permanent and discoverable. ## Disclosure is the floor, not the ceiling Wikipedia's conflict-of-interest guidance goes further than the Terms of Use. Editors with a financial relationship to a subject are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly. The expected workflow is to propose changes on the talk page and let an independent editor implement them, or to submit a new article as a draft for review. Disclosing and then editing the live article anyway is technically compliant with the Terms of Use and still likely to draw scrutiny. ## Rules differ by language edition Each Wikipedia community sets local policy on top of the global Terms of Use. Some are markedly stricter than English. An agency running a multi-market programme cannot assume one compliance model travels. ## What happens when you don't disclose Accounts get blocked. Related accounts get connected and blocked together. Articles get deleted, sometimes with a deletion discussion that names the client. Occasionally the story gets picked up by trade press. The exposure sits with the brand, not the freelancer who has already moved on. ## Why this is good news for agencies Compliance is a differentiator you can put in a client deck. "We work through disclosed accounts and independent review" is a defensible position that survives a client's legal review. "Our guy has a technique" is not.
