# How buyers vet vendors on ChatGPT — and what it means for your reputation stack

> What buyers actually ask AI engines about vendors, and how to make sure those answers help rather than hurt you.

Vendor due diligence used to mean a Google search, a Glassdoor scan, and maybe a quick LinkedIn check. Today it increasingly starts with ChatGPT.

We've watched dozens of buyers walk through their AI vetting process. The questions they ask are remarkably consistent — and the answers they get have closed deals quietly, before sales teams ever knew there was a deal.

## The five questions buyers ask

Almost every vetting session includes some version of:

1. "Tell me about [vendor]."
2. "Are they reputable? Any controversies?"
3. "Who are their customers?"
4. "What do users say about them on Reddit?"
5. "Compare [vendor] to [competitor]."

Each maps to a specific reputation surface. Ignore any one of them and the AI's answer goes thin or negative.

## What "tell me about" actually pulls from

The model synthesises from training data plus, if browsing is on, real-time retrieval. The strongest weight goes to:

- Wikipedia / Wikidata entry (existence + tone)
- The brand's own About page and Organization schema
- Established press coverage in the last 24 months
- LinkedIn company page (basic facts)

If your About page is vague, your press is thin, and you have no Wikipedia entity, the model's answer will be short, generic, and forgettable. That's worse than negative — it's invisible.

## Why "controversies" is a dangerous prompt

The model surfaces anything in its retrieval set that mentions the vendor in a negative context. Old news stories, unresolved Reddit threads, unanswered Trustpilot reviews — all fair game.

The fix isn't to suppress them (that rarely works) but to outweigh them with current, credible, positive context. Three pieces of recent tier-1 press in the last 18 months reliably reframes how the model answers this prompt.

## "Who are their customers" is a credibility moment

Models love named customers. If your case studies have logos but no narrative, or if your customer page is gated, the AI has nothing to quote. We routinely see brands lose deals here despite having impressive customer rosters — simply because the rosters aren't readable.

Solution: a public customers page with one paragraph per logo. Names, sectors, specific outcomes where permitted. Plain HTML, schema marked up, no gating.

## "What do users say on Reddit" is the silent killer

This is the prompt that surprises teams the most. Buyers ask it, the model answers honestly, and the answer is often based on a single thread from three years ago.

You can't fake this. You can:

- Engage authentically in relevant communities so newer threads exist
- Respond (carefully, properly disclosed) to legitimate complaints
- Earn discussion through genuine product improvements that users notice

What you can't do is buy upvotes or astroturf. Both are caught by community moderators and downweighted by AI engines.

## "Compare to competitor" exposes weak positioning

If your messaging is fuzzy, the model defaults to comparing whatever it finds — usually pricing, or the competitor's strongest dimension. If your messaging is sharp, the model picks up the comparison frame you've established.

This is one of the few areas where strong on-domain content directly beats off-domain authority. A clear, fair, well-sourced comparison page on your own site routinely shifts how AI describes your category position.

## The reputation stack you actually need

Six layers, in priority order:

1. Wikipedia/Wikidata entity (when notability allows)
2. Two to four pieces of recent tier-1 press
3. Public customers page with named outcomes
4. Authentic, sustained Reddit and Quora presence in your category
5. On-domain comparison content with primary-source citations
6. Schema markup + Markdown twins so all of the above is machine-readable

Most brands have 1–2 of these. The ones that quietly win AI-mediated deals have all six.
